Lent 3 Sunday March 23rd – We continue our journey through the “blues” of Lent. This week’s theme is Vanity. This morning’s blues come from various members of the Trinity family. Shalome MacNeill-Cooper performs “Go Down, Moses” as our prelude, a 19th century American piece about the yearning for freedom from slavery. Bryan Moore performs “Love in Vain,” one of the 29 extant precious blues treasures by the undisputed King of the Delta Blues, Robert Johnson. It was first recorded in 1937. Pat O’Kane sings “Slip Slidin’ Away,” a hit for Paul Simon in 1977. The song, says Pat, “talks about three different scenarios where people let their fears rule their lives, and sums up in the last verse by saying God alone knows everything.” In memory of the late great folk musician Pete Seeger (1919-2014), Jim Liddell requested our postlude piece, “Turn Turn Turn.” This song is a paraphrase of Ecclesiastes chapter 3, written by Seeger and popularized by “The Byrds” in 1965.
